Suh Is For Real And The Stafford Johnson Connection Was In Full Effect

The Lions defense, specifically the D-line played a huge role in picking up their 2nd win of the year over a winning team in the Washington Redskins. The D-line was able to sack the Washington quarterback 7 times including a huge sack fumble in the last 2 minutes which led to Ndamukong Suhs' first TD of his career when he scooped up the ball and ran it in making it 37-25 and thats how the game would end. "House of Spears" Suh had 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and the big fumble recovery for a score, and he was causing havoc along the 'Skins offensive line all day pushing linemen around and freeing up players like Cliff Avril who had a big 4th down sack late in the 4th quarter.

It was a breathe of fresh air for the Lions to have their leader back out on the field today. Not only did he look calm under fire but he was making plays left and right when he was called upon to do so. Stafford finished the day going 26/45 212 yards and 4 tds to 1 int, throwing 3 of those 4 touchdowns to his favorite target Megatron. Calvin also had a stellar day catching 9 passes for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns and giving De'angelo Hall a major headache all day beating him all over the field.

The run game was a bit of a concern again today with the "Beast" going for 44 yards and Kevin Smith gaining 51 on the ground, but the real problem was the kick coverage. Washington return man Brandon Banks returned a kick off 96 yards for a score and would have had another had it not been called back on an illegal block. Boneheaded penalties reared their ugly head for the Lions again but today they were able to over come all of the miscues and mistakes and come out of the game with a big win at Ford Field in front of the hometown fans. Now the Lions get to enjoy the win and start to prepare for the "Hard Knock" Jets who come into the D next Sunday coming off a shutout loss to the Packers at the Meadowlands.

Goodnight from the greatest sport city in the world and how 'bout them Lions!?!

No National Championship In Football For MSU This Year - Ossie Pulls To Two Wins From 400

The Red Wings took care of their divisional rival Nashville 5-2 down at the Joe tonight. Pavel Datsyuk went all "En Fuego" on the Preds tonight scoring twice and working his magic all night out on the ice; Eaves, Holmstrom, and Stuart added to the scoring each scoring goals. It was nice to see Ossie come back strong tonight after being a little shaky to start off the last game only letting in two on 23 shots and looking solid on the penalty kill. With the win tonight Osgood not only got his record back to 500 at 2-2 but he draws oh so close to his 400th win at 398 wins. The Wings still had some turn over troubles but they continue to look dangerous in the offensive zone and they are killing off penalties better then any team in the league right now. The Red Wings get right back to it on Monday when they host Phoenix and Datsyuks' good friend Ilya Bryzgalov at the JLA.

Well it was fun while it lasted wasn't it? Today Michigan States dream season came to a screeching halt in Iowa City losing to the Hawkeyes 37-6. Kirk Cousins was anything but good throwing 3 big Ints and no touchdowns until the 4th quarter. The run game was no where to be found once again only gaining 31 yards on the ground and averaging 1.8 yards per carry. The defense completely reverted to their form from earlier this season, not being able to stop Iowa on any possessions when they needed to during the game and giving up big pass plays in the secondary and struggling so much so that Pat Narduzzi came down from the coachs box to the sideline. I think that SpartanSports on twitter put it the best "only thing to do now is to take a sledgehammer to the game tape and get ready for Minnesota next week". The Spartans return home next Saturday to take on the Golden Gophers and try to get back on track in the win column.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and shake it off Sparty there is always another Saturday.

Coyotes Hand Wings 2nd Loss in Regulation

The Red Wings lost in regulation for only the second time this season to the Phoenix Coyotes. Osgood made an emergency start for Jim Howard, who is suffering from back spasms and Ossie was anything but his old self in the 1st. Despite letting in 3 goals in the 1st period Osgood regained his composure and the team started to play harder in front of him and he didn't allow another goal. Again the powerplay was a bit of a concern with the Wings only striking on 1 out of 6 tries. Franzen and Homer scored the goals for the Wings but the Wings just couldn't find a way to beat Bryzgalov to tie it up. Even though they lost, the Wings and their fans had reason to celebrate tonight, with Pavel Datsyuk aka the best player ive ever seen play EVER!!!! registered his 600th point assisting on Holmstroms goal. Datsyuk becomes the 9th player to score 600 points as a Red Wing. On a night when the Detroit D-men looked slow and the forwards couldn't find the back of the net Datsyuk was his normal self making the opposition look like they were wearing shoes with butter on their soles out on the ice instead of skates, turning them inside and out then back again. The Red Wings will shake the loss off and take to the JLA ice again Saturday night against the Preds.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world go see a chiropractor Jim and get that back straightened out

The Magic Man Strikes Again!!-Spartans Comeback, Run Record to 8-0

Pavel "Magic Man" Datsyuk did it again, giving the Wings a 5-4 win over the Ducks down at the Joe tonight. The entire game was very entertaining with a lot of up and down action from both of the teams and (thankfully) only a few penalties to speak of. The Wings scored early in the 1st on a Zetterberg powerplay goal but the Ducks answered with Bobby Ryan scoring with only a handful of seconds left on the clock. The 2nd period was a pretty wild one with both teams scoring 2 goals each to go into the 3rd tied at 3. Teemu Selanne gave the Ducks the lead mid way through the 3rd beating Howie five-hole on a shot im sure Jim would want another try at. With a few minutes left in the game the Wings turned up the heat and Zetterberg tied the game on a redirection for the wings 3rd tip-in goal of the game and his 2nd marker of the night. Then it was "El Diablo" time, Datsyuk picked up a rebound in front of the net made a Datsyukian deke around the defender and put the puck in the net over the shoulder of the Ducks goalie to win the game.  The Red Wings can enjoy the win and the rest they will get this week and be ready to do it again on Thursday against the Coyotes back at the JLA.

Well it definitely wasn't pretty but the Spartans gutted out a win in Evanston today getting their record to 8-0 4-0 in the BigTen and setting up a showdown in Iowa City next Saturday. The game didn't start off the way the Spartans wanted it to with them being down 17-0 at half-time. But once again coach D rallied the troops and had them ready to go for the third quarter. The offense came out and moved the ball down the field and scored once in the quarter to bring it to 14-17 and set up what would be another second half comeback. Then once again the Spartans put up a big number in the 4th quarter to take their first lead of the game 28-27 and scoring 21 points in the quarter. Then it was the defenses turn to turn it on, and turn it on they did stopping North Western on 4 plays. Then Edwin Baker smashed through the Wildcats D to put Sparty up by 8, 35-27 with 1 minute left in the game. Eric Gordon would pick off a Dan Persa pass and Michigan State ran out the clock to win a thriller. Two top ten plays in the game today were B.J. Cunninghams one handed tip-to-himself catch and another fake this time a fake punt to get a key 1st down in the 4th quarter. While im sure it feels great to be undefeated this far into the season i also know that coach Dantonio has one goal this year and thats to win a share of the BigTen title if not win it out right and that starts next Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. A few side notes from the game were Kirk Cousins going 29-43 for 331 yards and 3TD and 0INT and for the second week in a row the running game was held to just over 100 yards. This game is what championship seasons are made from.

Howie Sensational Tonight in Wings Win

The Red Wings gain a solid win over the struggling Calgary Flames 4-2 tonight down at the JLA. Zetterberg and Lidstrom both netted their first goals of the season in the game on great plays from Pavel Datsyuk, who was going all "Magic Man" on the Flames tonight. Franzen kept his game winning ways going with a 3rd period goal that he banked off Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoffs' face and over his shoulder into the back of the net. Bertuzzi salted the game away roofing a wicked wrista over Kiprs' shoulder and is still leading the team in points. But the real story tonight was the outstanding play by Jim Howard who stopped 34-36 shots and basically kept his team in it for the first 20 minutes when the Flames were all over the Wings. Howie had about 5 highlight reel saves and looked especially solid in rebound control not giving Calgary any second chances that they could take advantage of. Howard looks like he is more comfortable with being this teams number 1 this year and looks like he has settled down in his crease and is seeing the puck and the rest of the ice very well now, which can only be a good thing. He is now 3-0-1 on the season with a .942 save% and a 1.69 goals against, good for top 10 in the NHL. Again the Wings came out a little flat tonight, now whether this was due to the time off between the Phoenix game and tonight or if it is a growing trend i guess we will have to wait and see. But i think we all know that Mike Babcock won't let that trend continue as long as he has something to say about it.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and welcome back Brandon Inge and congrats on your new 2 year deal with a club option for a 3rd

Trade Rumors

I heard today that the Oakland Raiders may be looking to move some of their players before the trade deadline. If there is anyway that the Lions can go after cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha or outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley i think they need to throw everything they can at them. Picking up a shut down corner or a solid backer in a trade to fill some obvious holes in their defense would be critical in helping the lions to keep progressing as far as depth of talent goes. It would also allow them to focus on getting better on the O line through the draft next year which is in need of some serious help and leadership.

Lions Drop 24th Consecutive Road Loss To The Giants

Today the Lions just couldn't get out of their own way against the New York Giants. Stupid penalties, including two critical 3rd down personal foul calls that gave the Giants a fresh set of downs and resulted in two touchdowns on those drives. I hate to complain about the refs in any sport but today it seemed like the men in stripes forgot that we need a quarterback too, not calling any roughing the passer on two plays that injured the two remaining QB's we have. Taking Shaun Hill out of the game before the half and injuring 3rd stringer Drew Stanton in the 4th quarter, which had still injured Matt Stafford running half way on the field with his helmet on until he was called back to the sidelines. Even though the Lions had a chance to tie the game up in the end they just kept shooting themselves in the foot (as usual) with bone headed penalties and turn overs at the exact time that they could not afford to give the ball up. Lions lose another on the road 28-20 to what looked like a very beatable Giants team, now they have a bye week to rest and recover and from all accounts Matt Stafford will be back at the helm of the offense against the Redskins. On a very serious note Zack Follet went down on a hit he took covering a kick off and for a little while it didnt look too good, he was put on a back board and carted off and taken to a local hospital. But reports have now come out that he has full use of his extremities and that there was no damage to his spinal cord. This is great news because Zack is not only a fan favorite but a player that showed that he can be someone that can possibly develop into one of those linebacker spots if given the chance.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and glad to hear everything is as good as it can be with you Zack we all look forward to having you back out there stacking up running backs on the goal line

Kroner Scores With 16 Seconds Left In Over Time to Give The Wings A Much Needed Win Over The Coyotes-Michigan State Beats Illinois At Spartan Stadium And Finds Themselves On Top Of The Big Ten

The Wings got back to there winning ways tonight beating the Phoenix Gamblers 2-1 in OT. The Redwings were frustrated by the Coyotes goaltender holding them 0-6 on the powerplay and making huge saves for his team when called upon. Not to be out done Jim Howard was stellar in net saving 25-26 shots and holding the coyotes 0-3 on the powerplay and absolutely robbing Petr Prucha on a breakaway in the 1st period. The Wings seemed to gain momentum throughout the game forcing the Coyotes to give up powerplay opportunities, although they couldn't take advantage of them until there was 16 second left in over time. After the not so great game they played in Dallas im sure everyone in the Wings lockerroom was relieved to get the 2 points tonight and get back on track before returning home to take on a struggling Calgary Flame team on Thursday. Datsyuk netted his 3rd of the year going all Magic Man on the Coyotes and banking it off a defender past Bryzgalov to tie the game. It wasn't their best effort but if they can get the powerplay going i expect the Wings to be just fine, it was nice to see them get it done in OT though that is for sure.

Jobing.com arena in Phoenix after the Wings OT win (or is it like the sign says the JLA in the desert? haha love it)

The Spartans defense played a big role in their win over Illinois this afternoon. The defense caused four turn overs a fumble and three picks by Trenton Robinson, Johnny Adams, and Marcus Hyde. Not only did the D cause the four turn overs but they pitched a shut-out in the second half holding the Fighting Ron Zooks to only 6 points on two first half field goals. Some credit has to go to the Illinois defense too for holding the Double B's to under 100 yard for the first time this season, only giving up 93 yards on the ground. The Spartans pass game picked up the slack with Kirk Cousins finding his way to 201 yards and 1 TD on 13-24. Michigan State seemed to have a bit of a hangover from the big win over Michigan last weekend, but just as they had against Wisconsin and Michigan the past weekends they came out after the  half and made the necessary adjustments and found a way to win the game and look impressive while doing it. I know the talk now shifts to the big show down Oct. 30 in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes but i would like to see the Spartans start to play like the team we all want them to be where they take each game as they come and they do what they have to do to win that game. With Coach Dantonio i feel like i'm seeing that kind of attitude from this team they may start out a little slow or sloppy in the first two quarters but they come out of half-time and they finish the game and finish the game strong, which hasn't always been the case in years past with what seemed to be good Michigan State teams. Next up on the schedule for the Spartans are the Wild Cats of Northwestern in Evanston and their pass happy offense, if the secondary of Michigan State can keep up its stellar play of late i dont see why the Spartans wont go into the big game against Iowa the next weekend 8-0 but this is the Big Ten and no game is a gimme (except for maybe against Michigan...haha Rich Rod your teams a joke). But for the next 6 days im going to enjoy being 7-0 for the first time since 1966.

Lack Luster Effort Results In The Wings First Regulation Lose

The Dallas Stars handed the Wings their first regulation lose tonight in big D, beating them 4-1. The Stars looked fast and very physical against the Wings during the game and killed off 4-5 powerplays the Wings had during the game. The worst part of this lose wasn't the score or the lack of fire power on the PP, but the unfocused, slow and (most distressingly) uninterested play of the RedWings top lines for much of the game. I'm willing to give them a pass tonight because of how early it is in the season and that with some new players playing in new roles it may take a few games to iron out some kinks, this better not become a trend though. Johan Franzen left the game mid-way through the first period with what looks like a concussion. He was carrying the puck down the boards and when he tried to cut back out to the middle of the ice Stars d-man Mark Fistric (who found himself out of position and knew he was about to get beat) stuck out his arm and caught him right on the button dropping Franzen to the ice, no call. Whether or not Fistric meant to hit him the way he did is irrelevant now, but in a season where the NHL is trying to cut down on head injuries and players targeting other players heads in hits the first couple of weeks has not gone very well in regards to that effort. I'm sure Babcock will have his team ready to go on saturday against Phoenix and i expect as much. If we see more of the same from tonight even though its early the Wings may have a problem.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and put and ice pack on that noggin Franzen

Maltby Calls It A Career

The Red Wings lost their first game of the season tonight 5-4 in OT to the Colorado Avalanche. Johan Franzen had a good game netting 2 goals in regulation, but the Av's answered every time and forced a shootout after weathering the storm in OT. The Wings shooters couldn't beat Budaj in the shootout and when they did they found post, Brandon Yip would eventually make a nice move and beat Jim Howard high glove side to win it. With the overtime lose the wings manage to get a point and remain in 1st place in their division early in the season. I understand that its only 3 games into the season but with a 3-1 lead at home in the 2nd period you have to be able to fight off the other team for the win. But the real news of the day was the announcement that Kirk Maltby has officially retired. The 17 year NHL vet started out the year on waivers and made the decision to retire rather then play in Grand Rapids this season. He was an integral part of the Wings 4 Stanley Cup winning teams playing on the infamous Grind Line with Kris Draper and Darren McCarty and later on lines with other grinder type players but never far away from Draps. He ends his career with 1,072 games played, 128 goals, and 132 assists. He will always be a fan favorite here in Detroit for his grittiness and toughness and will hold a special place in hearts of all Wing fans because of his connection to the city. Congratulations on a very successful and memorable career Malts and all the best in the future.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and here is an example of why we love Kirk Maltby here in Detroit

No 0-16 This Year

The Lions finally broke through the win column today with a beat down of the St. Louis Rams. The Lions were able to put together a complete 60 minute game today winning as close to a must win game as you can get 44-6 in Ford Field. The offense was able to to consistently gain yards and put points on the board on every drive and on every redzone possession. Shaun Hill was what he had to be today for the Lions to get the win and was the star throwing 3 TD with 0 INT and running the offense as well as anyone could have expected. Megatron and The Beast were the feature players on offense today with Calvin catching 1 touchdown and Jahvid helping to keep the Rams D off balance with picking up solid yards on his carries today. The defense was making big plays all over the field today holding Steven Jackson to under 100 yards rushing before the 4th quarter and 0 TD and keeping Bradford to going 23-45 with 215 yards and 0 TD with 2 INT. The Lions D were able to cause 3 turnovers including Ndamukong Suhs' first career INT and Alphonso Smiths' pick six and not allowing the Rams to score a point in the second half. The start of the game was exactly what the Lions needed they recovered an on side kick on the opening kick off which set up a field goal to go up 3-0 then Stefan Logan took one to the house returning a kick off 105 yards making it 10-3 followed shortly by a TD catch by Megatron making it 17-3, Pettigrew would catch a late TD pass making it 24-6 at the half which basically ended the game. It was great to see the team finally come together and play like a team for 60 minutes and get the win today.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and take it easy with the shoulder this week Calvin we dont need another franchise player injured this year

Who's Little Brother Now?

The other team is WEAK!!! and that other team would be the Michigan Wolverines. Today they got routed at home by a more balanced and tougher Michigan State team. The game started off just as it had been billed throughout the whole week with the teams hitting each other right in the mouth, that is until the Spartans run game got going. Michigans defense looked much improved but they couldn't keep the double Bs' down for long Baker and Bell eventually would break loose. The half would end on a blocked field goal that would have brought Michigan within 4 points but they found themselves down 17-10. Then the wheels feel off, Michigan would allow 24 unanswered points and turn it over twice in the second half essentially taking themselves out of the game. Now this wasn't Michigan losing the game as much as it was Michigan getting beat in every facet of the game. They were turned over 3 times to States 0, 377 yards to 536 and the most important stat i believe was Michigan State out gaining Michigan on the ground 249 to 162. Denard Robinson was held in check by the Spartans defense all game not being allowed to break loose for one of his patented long TD runs. The Spartans defense also showed Michigan and its fans that to win in the Big Ten you have to be more then a one trick pony on offense. I acknowledge that Denard is a great talent and an incredible athlete but he can't win the game by himself against teams that are better then his. Enough about the losers, the Spartans came into the Big House as under dogs despite being ranked higher then Michigan in the poles and gave the "Big Brother" a good old fashioned butt whooping in front of all the fans. Kousins had the game that he needed going 18-25 284 yds with 1 TD and 0 INT, Baker and Bell were a huge part of the offense again helping to rack up yards and chew up clock while wearing down the Wolverine defense. Baker was the feature back in the game putting up 147 yards on 22 rushes and punching in a touchdown while Bell added 78 on 7 rushes with a touchdown, Larry Caper would also add a late touchdown to help seal Michigan States big victory in Ann Arbor. For everyone that is keeping score that 3-0 for Michigan State in the last 3 years and 2-0 in the Big House and the way things are going with both squads i dont see that changing anytime soon. Like i said Rich Rod those wangs on your hemits wouldn't do you a damn bit of good when we showed up.

Great effort in the back to back games for the Wings this weekend to open up the season. It was great to see them handle the Ducks on Friday night at the Joe but it was even sweeter to see them go into the United Center in Chicago and spoil the Hawks party tonight winning 3-2. The game was fun to watch with a lot of skill out on the ice for both teams and it went down to the wire thanks to Chicago getting 3 straight power play tries at the end of the third. Bertuzzi scored for the wings and Fillupula scored twice including the game winner in the third period. But the real star of the game was Chris Osgood who notched his 397 win tonight and now is 3 wins short of becoming the 6th member of the ultra exclusive 400+ win club. One of the positives that came out of the win tonight besides just beating the Hawks on their banner raising night was the fact that even though the Wings gave up 5 penalties throughout the game they only allowed one power play goal and went 1-4 themselves on the PP. The Wings get right back at it on Tuesday against another old rival when they host the Colorado Avalanche at 7:30.

Goodnight from the greatest sports city in the world and keep licking those wounds Michigan fans Indiana may be the last W you see this year

Welcome Home MO

Ok first off who else is loving Jim Howards new Dr. Octopus helmet graphics? The Wings opened up the 2010-11 season at home with a 4-0 win over the not so mighty Ducks at the Joe. Mike Modano made it apparent to all the fans that he was happy to be home when he scored 6 minutes into the first period (first goal in the first period of your first game isn't a bad way to introduce yourself). The Mule opened up the scoring in the first period and Datsyuk aka En Fuego and Dan Cleary added goals in the second period. Although it was great to see Modano score in his first game as a Wing and Jim Howard get the shutout the real star of the game was Pavel Datsyuk aka Killer (thats five nicknames for all of you keeping score at home) getting a goal, an assist and and winning a fight for the Gordie Howe hat trick. During an interview after the game Pav would say that he had always dreamed of getting one but he never thought he would, well Pavel dreams do come true. While he is definitely out of the Lady Bing award race i think he will settle for another piece of hardware at the end of the season that weighs 35 1/2 pounds and stands 3 feet tall.

Better...But Still Not Quite Good Enough

It was the same old out come but it wasn't really the same old Lions on sunday afternoon in Green Bay. While they still had way to many penalties and turnovers they should that even with a back up QB and a less then stellar secondary they have made a huge improvement from last weeks game in Minnesota. The offense finally got Calvin involved early and often with him have 2 Tds and over 70 yards by half time. The defensive secondary showed up in the second half causing two interceptions that lead to two field goals bringing game within reach of the Lions. But once again they just couldn't find a way to get the win and it goes back to the penalties and turnovers when you the game ends in a 2 point differential like it did today. I am hoping they can take some of the confidence they built up today against the packers and bring it to Ford Field next week and get their first win of the season against a very beatable St. Louis Rams team.

Good night from the greatest sports city in the the world fingers crossed for Staffords return this sunday so we can get the match-up that everyone wants

Sparty On

The #24 Michigan State Spartans took down the #11 Wisconsin Badgers today beating them 34-24 in East Lansing. It was a hard fought game for both sides but in the end the Spartans had just a little more fire power to earn a victory. With about 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter Wisconsin kicked a field goal to bring the game within 3 points at 27-24. The Spartans would get the ball back and marched the field going 84 yards to the Badger 2 yard line where they faced a 4th and 2 situation with about 2:45 left in the game. Rumor has it that fill in coach Don Treadwell and the rest of the coaching staff had a little help on deciding to go for it, after the game there were reports that coach Dantonio had been calling and texting the coaches throughout the game from his bed in an East Lansing hospital. The call on 4th down was a play action pass to a wide open BJ Cunningham in the back of the endzone putting Sparty up 34-24. Wisconsin would make a few good plays to move the ball down the field at the end of the game but needing a touchdown and an onside kick recovery they went for it on 4th and long thats when Eric Gordon made a game winning tackle stopping them short of the first down marker and turning the ball over on downs. It was an all around great performance for the Michigan State program today with the offense amassing nearly 450 yards of offense and 34 points on a stout Big Ten defense in Wisconsin. QB Kirk Cousins was very good when he had to going 20-29 269 yards and 3TD to 2INT, the double B's Baker and Bell combined for 175 rushing yards and kept the Badger defense off balance all day which helped to set up what would end up being the game winning touchdown pass and Keshawn Martin added a momentum swing in favor of the Spartans on a huge punt return for a touchdown. This was the high profile win that the Spartans would always come close to getting but never could find away to finish off like the lose to Iowa last year that took them out of the race for at least a share of the Big Ten title. But this year there seems to be a different feel to this Michigan State team a determination a never say die attitude a swagger even, and i for one think it comes directly from their head coach Mark Dantonio and they proved that today beating a very good Wisconsin Badger team with their coach still not on the sideline. This of course sets up a huge battle of the unbeatens in Ann Arbor between Michigan State and Michigan, i for one think this will be the first game that Denard Robinson will be slowed down and expose what the Michigan team is, a high octane one man show on offense and a defense that cant stop the run. GO GREEN!!!!! Go WHITE!!!!!! WE ARE COMING RICHROD AND ALL THOSE WANGS ON YOUR HEMITS WONT DO YOU A DAMN BIT OF GOOD WHEN WE GET THERE.
